Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 235 – The Terrifying Walk with Jesus

This is a devotion you have probably already preached to yourself experientially. This devotion is a polemic of rage against all those who think Walking with Jesus is all sweetness and light. Ha!

“I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” John 10:10

Firstly, we do not know where we are going. We also will not know who we are going to meet, and then we don’t know what we will be doing. Jesus will pivot here to speak to a person with addled eyes and the smell of unwashed clothes. Then Jesus will take us through the squeeze-shoot of running an ethical business till we scream at the bars of corruption pinning us from the left and the lack of cash flow pinning us on the right. He will then send us to the most polluted cities and difficult business environments. He will then compel us to call a long lost friend. Jesus will then ask you to love someone who will never love you back. And that’s just the first day!

Then He will conform us to himself. Ripping the barnacles off our worldly hull.

After that, I hope we will come to the conclusion that, as Eric Osness says, “You are not the lead character in your own story.”

“It’s still terrifying to walk with Jesus. It hasn’t lost its teeth. Especially in times exactly like these.” Martin Shaw, Redemptive Totems

Amen. I have been walking with a friend who wants to know Jesus better. Even as I speak to him about the Son of Man, a part of me thinks, “Are you sure, dear friend? Do you know what you are getting into following Him? This Yeshua is no ordinary bloke, there will be crosses, there will be pain, there will be great adventure.”

But, and it is a big proviso, Jesus walks with us. He goes where he sends you. And that makes all the difference.

The abundant life He promises is a beautiful tapestry of the black threads of despair, pinks of the sunrise, red of shed blood, purple of His Kingly Presence, verdant greens and the brilliant blue of the Water of Life. We need all the colours.

Prayer

God, every scale you rip off hurts, but at least You have the salve of redemption.

Amen
