The hard work of radical discipleship leads to great hope.
Isaiah does not describe a thin hope, or a hope built on sentiment. He describes a hope that rises when God’s people spend themselves on behalf of the hungry, satisfy the needs of the oppressed, and allow His light to break into dark places.
“Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins
and will raise up the age-old foundations;
you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls,
Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.” Isaiah 58:12
ReGen’s work with Pastor B in Central Asia reflects this principle. Through the practical application of acquiring a farm, restoring the soil, then helping manage the land, we are supporting his work to restore the lives of the addicts and homeless he serves through his centre, through the provision of cash crops, food for the centre, and employment. The largest return on investment is hope.
Business is such a practical outworking of this verse. Some of you are civil engineers, actually repairing broken walls and restoring streets. Others of you are rebuilding the broken walls of relationship. Business people are builders. We fix things; it is what we do.
It’s more than providing physical infrastructure. The business God has given you to steward provides stability of employment, stronger community bonds, bastions of knowledge. A foretaste of the flourishing Jesus promises.
Prayer
Lord Jesus,
Thank You that You do not leave broken things broken. You restore lives, communities, work, land, and hope. Teach us to spend ourselves wisely and faithfully on behalf of those in need. Make our businesses places of repair, stability, provision, and peace.
Amen
Mark
