Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 296 – A small act of resistance
Last week we spoke about choosing between ‘good and good’. Let’s continue to develop our decision-making rigour in business.
Recently, Dr Maya Shankar and Dr. Laurie Santos reflected on our society’s penchant for distraction, something that can quietly enter even the best-run organisations. To counter this, they commended a simple but powerful triad articulated by Catherine Price’s: What for? Why now? What else?
As distractions press in, let us apply the maxim below to resist them.
What for?
- To what end am I acting before God, strengthening my business, and blessing others? What must I accomplish right now?
“Test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” – 1 John 4:1a
Why now?
- Why am I doing this at this moment? Can I distinguish obedience from urgency, calling from compulsion and readiness from restlessness, what is the best thing I can do at this moment? Is this action aligned with love of God and neighbour, or is it merely relieving discomfort, anxiety, or ego?
“The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.” – Proverbs 22:3
What else?
- Using the human agency that Grace perfects, what better, truer, more life-giving option is available?
“Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.” – Jeremiah 6:16
Think of discernment as tending the soil of the moment—choosing what will bear good fruit rather than simply what is available. That discernment is what we hope to apply in Regen.Global, and we hope this maxim served you as well. Asking “why now?” is not mere self-management; it is a small act of resistance against distraction, a reclaiming of agency, and a way of walking the pilgrim path faithfully—choosing not just what is good, but what is asked of us in this moment.
Prayer
What for, Lord?
Align my action with Your purposes.
Why now, Spirit?
Reveal what is stirring my heart.
What else, God?
Open my imagination to Your better way.
Amen
