Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 292 – The faithful craftsperson
My father-in-law, Marty, was a cabinet maker of the highest order. He knew wood intimately. Tools sang in his hands.
He came back to mind recently as we prepared to move an armoire he built from my eldest daughter and her husband’s house to my younger daughter and her husband’s farm. As I readied it for the move, I had time to really look at it again. I admired its sturdiness, the grace of its curves, its usefulness, and its beauty.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “See, I have called by name Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability, and knowledge in all kinds of craftsmanship, to design artistic works. – Exodus 31:1-4
It also carries a good story. Marty crafted the armoire from mahogany shipping crates that once held his possessions when he moved from Peru. What once protected his livelihood in transit became, through careful hands and patient skill, a piece of furniture that now serves another generation.
I believe Marty’s pursuit of excellence was never about ego, though he was proud of his work. His craftsmanship was an offering, not an idol. He worked with intensity, attention, knowing that good work, well done, honours both people and God.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. – Colossians 3:23
As we begin a new year, may you continually craft beautifully. Whether your work involves tools, soil, spreadsheets, contracts, or conversations, may you be filled with the Holy Spirit and take deep joy in the making.
Prayer
Lord God,
You are the master craftsman,
who delights in good work and faithful hands.
As we labour in the tasks set before us,
fill us with your Holy Spirit.
Amen
