Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 275 – Succession

I have been reading of the succession of Henry I, king of England and Normandy (reigned 1100-1135) after he died. Let’s just say it did not go well.

That reflection has made me  consider succession in my own work. Many of you have shared in the success (all glory to God) of Regen.Global. I’m now thinking of how that success can continue as my time at the helm is over and/or my role changes.

“Stand up in the presence of the elderly, and show respect for the aged. Fear your God. I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:32

As I have been working on the succession plan and studying the successes and failures of others, a few common themes emerge:

  1. Start early. Don’t wait until the moment is upon you.
  2. Expect difference. The vision and strengths of those who follow will be related to yours, but not the same.
  3. Step aside. When the plan takes effect, get out of the way.

I’ll soon be heading to Tajikistan, where the young do actually stand up in the presence of the elderly. It is a tradition of fealty and respect. Elders like me should reciprocate that respect by getting out of the way, so that the young can execute the vision God has given.

If you need help with your succession plan, I can recommend no one better that my friend and colleague Harry T. Jones. He has given me great advice in the past and continues to spread his wisdom to others.

Prayer

God, let me know the proper time where my successor must increase, but I must decrease.

Amen
