Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 272 – Lunch

I was once speaking to an Afghani colleague and talking about long-term plans and building reputation for his business. He looked at me and said, “Mark, here, we only worry about whether we can put lunch on the table.” Given what he, his family and his country are going through, his view was quite understandable.

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

You may have employees who have share a similar short-term perspective. Some feel they have little agency or control over their future. During annual reviews, I would ask my staff about their one, three, and ten year plans. Many had never thought past the end of the week. They were grateful simply to have work for today.

Those who had ten-year goals were the easiest to lead. Even if their long term vision meant they would one day move on, I could help them take steps toward that future. Because we worked together toward their goals, they were deeply engaged and highly productive.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Jesus says not to worry about the future. He also asks us to carefully consider the cost of our choices.

And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? Luke 14:27-28

This holy tension between living fully in the present and planning wisely for both our temporal and eternal future is the mark of a flourishing life. It is what I passionately nurture in my colleagues,  my staff and my Afghani friends.

Prayer

God, help me live in the present as I look to the future with you.

Amen
