Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 267 – They don’t play by the same rules
You are a faith-oriented businessperson. You work hard to show integrity, honesty and consistency in your business. You deliver value that exceeds the price you charge. But there is a good chance the people you deal with daily in your business don’t follow the same rules.
“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” Matthew 10:16
That makes doing business difficult. As you navigate its complexities, be aware of the obvious and the subtle. Overt evil, especially greed and laziness, is easy to spot, at least after a couple of interactions. Greed and laziness are often easy to spot after a few interactions. But the quiet compromises, the ones that don’t look like evil at first, can be more dangerous. Be especially discerning about the slow slide into the Venus fly trap of partnerships with those who dodge taxes, pay bribes, cut corners, or offer shoddy services.
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
The best defence? Pay attention! Keep your brain and soul sharp by knowing what is going on through watching what is going on, fervent prayer and wise counsel.
Don’t let your Light become covered by the soot of corruption. Polish the glass often with cleansing integrity.
Prayer
God of discernment, be my scout on the hill. Keep my vision clear. Help me remain vigilant.
Amen
