Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 261 – Under the tree

Yes, we must look at quarterly returns and our annual profit and loss balance in our business. But if we only measure success in short-term increments, we risk missing the larger calling we’ve been given—to bear fruit that lasts.

“I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last…”. John 15:16

Today, Terri and I planted seven small Aspen trees seedlings in an area scarred by mining. These trees will not reach full maturity for 40 years. Terri and I have planted trees under whose shade we will not sit. Aspens regenerate through a shared root system. One such clonal colony—called Pando—has endured for an estimated 80,000 years. Individual stems rise and fall, but the life underground continues, quietly pushing up new growth.

What if our businesses could be like that? What legacy can our businesses give? What lasting blessing can you and I provide this good earth that endures beyond us, even into eternity?

As you work through your next strategic cycle, please consider the long term. Then it is time to plant—faithfully, quietly, persistently. Even if we never see the full fruit ourselves.
