Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 252 – The edge effect

I am an ecologist and one of the principles in ecology is that the most diverse species assemblage is where two ecotypes meet, at the edge of prairie and parkland, parkland and forest, forest and tundra. It’s called the edge effect.

“O Lord, how manifold are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Psalm 104:24

I would argue that there are two areas in business where can you exploit the edge effect.

The first is to surround yourselves with a diversity of people. People who think differently; who complement your talents, not mirror them; individuals who find different ways to execute a project.

The second is to look at the edges of your market, geographically as well as in terms of service or product. Granted you have to ensure your core market is strong and well served, but opportunities for growth and providence are often at the edges. Remember, Abraham did not find the ram on the altar, but in a thicket behind him.

Prayer

God, even as I fix my eyes on you, may I see the opportunities you have given me at the edge of my vision.

Amen
