Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 249 – Use what you have

Greetings from away. My friend and reader of this devotional Kevin recounted the story of an Indian colleague who said he likes the gospel writer’s Mark’s version of the story of the feeding of the 5000 the best, because Jesus asks his disciples what they have and to use what’s there before He miraculously steps in.

“But (Jesus) answered them, “You give them something to eat.” (The disciples) said to Him, “That would take more than half a year’s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it ot them to eat?’  “How many loaves do you have?” He asked. “Go and see.” When they found out, they said “Five loaves and two fish.” Mark 6:37-38

I have written of this before (Hands, no 225 (2 Kings 4:2)), but this principle bears repeating. We need to count the resources we have: intellectual, physical, financial, spiritual before we go to God for miraculous increase. We need to be faithful with little (Luke 16:10) A SWOT/TOWS analysis is a good start, but remember to add all the strengths (including spiritual).

As I write this, I am attending meetings and courses with Foundations for Farming. They challenge their farmers to use the tools they have, starting with a hoe. May you find your hoe today.

Prayer

Jesus, let me offer the bread I have, which I know you can multiply.

Amen
