Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 256 – The end in mind
Did I ever tell you how much I hate swimming?
“…and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”“ Hebrews 12:1b,2a
It might surprise you, considering I was once a nationally ranked swimmer. But standing at the edge of the pool fills me with dread. I hate the shock of cold and the feeling of wet.
“But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
I jump in anyways. The first two hundred metres hurt as my body screams ‘What are you doing!?!’ and I cannot catch my breath as old injuries flare up.
Then things start falling into rhythm. I get into the zone and go back and forth. My breathing becomes regular and the muscles and joints strain to finish each stroke. I sometimes think of Jesus with me (though he walks ON the water) keeping me company and getting me through the swim.
It’s over. I did it. The job is complete and I am satisfied.
There will be times you will not want to dive into the deep end of business. It’s cold and difficult and overwhelming. At those times remember your higher purpose of loving God and neighbour through your efforts. The reward is worth it.
Prayer
God, swim with me.
Amen
