Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 237 – Progress not Perfection
I finish my three-year term this month as a corporate secretary of our Central Asian firm. I like leaving things better than I found them. And so as I transfer files, protocols, and procedures, I want them to perfect.
“You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Matthew 5:48
Working toward the perfect can degrade to perfectionism, an obsession that has bad consequences. (1) I can get to a frozen state where I cannot take the next step, because it is not a ‘perfect’ step. (2) I want it so perfect that it takes me far longer than it might, stopping me from doing more productive things and (3) being ‘perfect’ stops my successors from building their own systems and approaches.
It’s progress not perfection.” Workaholics Anonymous
At my last Workaholics Anonymous meeting, my friends reminded me that progress is key, not perfection. I need to deliver workable corporate records, not perfect corporate records.
We are being made perfect in Christ. It is a journey, with the destination being in the permanent, intimate presence of God.
“Things do not have to be perfect to be special.” Strictly Come Dancing
Prayer
Thank you for walking with me on this path of progress.
Amen
