Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 234 – Just Move

My brother-in-law Jim and I had a long talk the other night about faith and family. He asked me of my journey with Christ, especially how Terri and I landed up in challenging countries spreading the Good News. As I reflected on our journey, I realised God works best with a stone (me) that is already moving.

“For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.” Mark 11:23

The verse above is fraught with misinterpretation, especially by the prosperity movement. I am not going there. My experience is different, better described in the quote below.

You do not have to move mountains, you just have to move. Celine Dion, I Am. 2024

Every decision Terri and I made in the latter part of our business journey—and later in serving others through business as mission—has not been like throwing a mountain into the sea. Instead, it has felt more like rolling a stone down a path. We sense a direction, we pray, and we roll the stone of an idea a few millimetres. Then we pray again and roll the stone a metre. There’s a mix of faith and a lot of doubt about whether we’re rolling along the right path. Yet, it’s as if the Trinity says, “Ah, they’re moving—now We will act.” That’s when God takes over, doing what only He can do. The stone begins to roll faster, propelled down the slope of the Holy Spirit, gaining momentum all the way.

The mountain God moves is you—into a life of faith and adventure.

Prayer

God, I am up and rolling this morning. I look forward to the adventure.

Amen
