Having Heart – Devotions for a Busy Business Person no. 221

Of all the types of capital needed to be a business person, Hope is the most valuable. Hope gives heart, the willingness to persevere.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

“Hope has two beautiful daughters; their names are Anger and Courage. Anger at the way things are, and Courage to see they do not remain as they are.” Attributed to St. Augustine (apocryphal)

No entrepreneur can survive without Hope. Business people sees something that needs to be changed, addresses the issue and creates value in the process. Hope oils the drive of progress.

Hope has another intrinsic value. It is the spear that pins despair quivering to the ground. Francis X. Maier writes, “Georges Bernanos once described hope as “despair overcome”—despair experienced, suffered, and overcome through the grace of God and the cooperation of the human will. Hope has a strength that comes of struggling with doubt and fear. It has substance, which hollow optimism lacks.”

Hope is not some Poly-Annish feeling with butterflies flitting about. It is a hard-eyed warrior that sees through the miasma of despair and the fog of the ways things are to the God-given vision of how things should be.

Prayer

God, my Hope is in you alone. Thanks for your gracious gift of helping me see how things should be and driving forward with me to that place.

Amen
