Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 301 – The long obedience
Many people think about finishing well near the end of a career (Business Devotion 26). But finishing well is often determined much earlier than we imagine.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” — 2 Timothy 4:7
Finishing well grows out of the small decisions made day after day, long before anyone is thinking about legacy.
Most of you reading this are in the thick of building something. A company. A consultancy. A farm. A ministry initiative. Perhaps you are simply trying to keep a young enterprise alive through the ups and downs of markets, clients, and cash flow.
These early seasons matter. They are the seasons when habits are formed, character is tested, and direction quietly sets itself. In business, as in life with God, trajectory often matters more than speed.
This invites three questions.
What trajectory am I on?
Not just in revenue, reach, or recognition, but in character, obedience, and stewardship before God. A business may grow quickly while a soul quietly drifts. It is worth asking from time to time: Is my life bending toward faithfulness, or merely toward activity?
“Let us examine our ways and test them,
and let us return to the Lord.” – Lamentations 3:40
What habits today shape how I will finish?
The habits we form early tend to stay with us. Small compromises harden the heart over time. Small acts of faithfulness soften and steady it. Truthfulness in a contract. Fairness with employees. Generosity when margins are thin. These choices may seem small now, but they shape the person we become and the organisation we steward.
“A man reaps what he sows… Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:7–9
What does faithfulness look like in the long obedience?
It looks like consistency: telling the truth, keeping commitments, stewarding resources wisely, and remaining teachable. Faithfulness grows in the ordinary rhythms of work.
“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.” – 1 Corinthians 4:2
If you are early in your business journey, take heart. You do not need to have everything figured out. But it is worth asking where the road you are on is leading.
Prayer
Lord,
Guide the direction of my work and my life.
Help me choose habits that lead to faithfulness, integrity, and wisdom.
Guard my heart from compromise when pressures arise.
Teach me perseverance, humility, and obedience in the ordinary rhythms of business.
And by Your grace, set me on a path that will one day lead to a faithful finish.
Amen
Mark
