Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 273 – Respect

A month or so ago, I breakfasted with my cousin Jason, one of my favourite entrepreneurs. Over coffee and eggs (his treat!), he said something that still sticks with me, “Respect, if you have it, things work, if lost, they don’t.”

“The integrity of the upright guides them, but the crookedness of the treacherous destroys them.” Proverbs 11:3

Jason builds respect in his various businesses through patient hard work, integrity, and a laser focus on his clients.

“Set the believers an example in speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” 1 Timothy 4:12b

Respect takes years to build and a day to lose. It requires both a sharp sword and a good shield. Wield the sword by earning respect through diligent work, keeping your promises, and delivering quality on time and on budget. Raise the shield to guard your reputation, holding fast to your moral compass even when no one is watching.

“Show yourself in all respects a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, gravity, and sound speech that cannot be censured.” Titus 2:7-8

And remember, you do not have to develop respect alone. Please pray daily for God’s help in maintaining integrity and surround yourself with people who will hold you accountable when they see your sword or shield slipping.  Even Moses had help holding his hands up.

Many of you have helped hold my hands up, and I am grateful.

Prayer

God, help me work diligently to build respect, turning to you consistently for accountability.

Amen
