Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 260 – The most dangerous time
You want to know the most dangerous time for your company? When things are going well.
“Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God.” Deuteronomy 8:11-13a
For the first time, The (Re)Generation Initiative, our charity helping restore barren hearts in barren lands, is flourishing. It has taken 10 years, but we are emerging from
the famine of provision, from the season of ‘relying on the ravens’, and entering the land of plenty, equipped with resources to carry out at least part of our mission.
And I am quite concerned.
It is when things are going well that it becomes easy to forget God, to believe the lie that success is something I achieved on my own. Ego is a subtle and dangerous thing. It often hides during hardship, only to resurface when things are good.
So will you pray for me?
In this time of plenty, may I remember the antidote to Ego – to praise the Lord – just as Deuteronomy 8 commands. I pray every success for you as well. As you experience God’s provision, may you always give Him the glory and thanks.
Prayer
God, Everything comes from you. May we always praise you for your provision.
Amen
Mark
