Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 245 – Which trees to cut?
It is really tempting in business to go for short-term extractive gains even at the expense of sustainable (evergreen) revenue.
“Only the trees that you know are not trees for food you may destroy and cut down, that you may build siegeworks against the city that makes war with you, until it falls.” Deuteronomy 20:20
If you are in the business for the long haul, the extractive approach can be costly. Coming from a land whose economy relies heavily on extractive resources, I can tell you that what seems like ‘easy’ revenue always has an expiration date.
What fruit trees has God given you? What evergreen sources of revenue, even if they are not the highest return on investment, provides a stable cashflow? Nurture those. A steady source of income may go a long way to cover your fixed overhead and sustain your business. Once your ‘orchard’ is stable and bearing fruit, you can look for new revenue opportunities.
Prayer
Dear God, help me to see the fruit you have already given me that continuously delights.
Amen
