You need to find the trees to find the birds[1]  – Devotions for a Busy Business Person, no. 228

I am in back in Canada after a rich time in Korea. Yesterday, Terri and I along with able volunteers spent time planting trees in an old coal mine to help restore it to flourishing. That got me thinking about the need for you to know your business environment.

“(Jesus) told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.” Luke 21:29-30

Terri and I collaborate with companies engaged in Business as Mission, committed to fostering the spiritual, social, and environmental well-being of the people they serve while maintaining sustainable profitability. These businesses often operate in challenging economies, grappling with issues such as weak supply chains and corrupt governments. However, the most significant challenge we frequently encounter isn’t these obstacles, substantial as they are, but rather the fact that in their enthusiasm, many have chosen to develop products and services for which no market exists.

You do not have to be in a closed country to make that mistake; in developed economies the same bad choice is made for different reasons. The primary reason is they fall in love with their technical solution without checking if there is a market for it.

So, be aware. Be a student of the market. Please make sure you have customers.

Prayer

Hi God, please wake me up to the market You want me to serve.

Amen

Mark
